  4.     When the happy mother saw her daughter's first baby pictures,
  5. she had a startled reaction: "Whoa, who does she look like?" The
  6. woman and her husband agreed that their child bore a striking
  7. resemblance to Dr. Cecil Jacobson, who had been treating them
  8. for infertility.

  10.     They weren't the only ones. In Alexandria, Va., last week,
  11. a federal jury found that Jacobson had artificially inseminated
  12. more than a dozen patients with his own sperm, claiming that it
  13. came from anonymous donors. DNA tests linked Jacobson to at
  14. least 15 such children, and prosecutors charged he may have
  15. fathered as many as 75. Jacobson also fooled patients into
  16. believing they were pregnant when they were not through hormone
  17. treatments that simulated side effects of pregnancy -- then
  18. billed them for the conception.

  20.     "I spent my life trying to help women have children," said
  21. Jacobson, a prominent infertility specialist who introduced
  22. amniocentesis in the U.S. to diagnose defects in unborn babies.
  23. "It's a shock to be found guilty of trying to help people."
  24. Convicted on 52 counts of fraud and perjury, the doctor faces
  25. up to 280 years in prison and $500,000 in fines when he is
  26. sentenced in May.
